MediaDB / in an adventurer on a slippery slope. The heroine of Marton's novel, the widow of a sergeant killed in the Poltava battle, left in poverty, is forced to turn to her only capital - beauty and youth. Striving for success and enrichment, she is unscrupulous in her means: she cheats, lies, deceives and robs her lovers, firmly remembering that only money provides peace and honor. Martona is not interested in the moral and ethical side of her behavior; she does not distinguish between what is good and what is bad from a moral point of view. A noticeable feature of the style of “The Pretty Cook” is the inclusion in her text of folk proverbs and sayings, used to reinforce the author’s thoughts, as a summary to Martona's reasoning, as an explanation of some of her actions.
