MediaDB / «The Simple Art of Killing" by Raymond Thornton Chandler: download fb2, read online
About the book: 1950 / For many reasons, the detective story lacks subtlety. Murder - the collapse of an individual and thereby the defeat of all humanity - may have (and, in fact, does have) a certain sociological background. If a detective novel is at least partially reliable (which happens extremely rarely), then it must be written with a certain degree of detachment, otherwise, only a madman could read (or write) it. A murder novel also has the distressing quality of not prying into other people's affairs: it solves its own problems and answers its own questions. Thus, there is nothing to discuss in it, except whether it is written well enough to be considered real literature, although the people who sell half a million copies of such a novel cannot really say anything about this. Determining the quality of a work is a task of incredible difficulty, even for those who do it professionally.
