About the book: 2005 / The main battle tank M60 became the next stage in the unofficial competition between American and Soviet tank builders, with the overseas side in this confrontation constantly acted as a catch-up. Its predecessor, the M48 Paton II (see Armored Collection No. 1, 2004), was created as a counterweight to the T-34-85, however, it was almost ten years late, and it turned out to be quite crude. By the mid-1950s, the designers managed to “cure” the M48 from most of the “childhood diseases”, after which, according to the military, the Patton II could well lay claim to the role of a tank capable of fighting the “thirty-fours”. But it’s not for nothing that the concept of “arms race” exists - before the Yankees had time to breathe a sigh of relief, having received a truly modern and reliable tank into service, intelligence provided detailed information about the Soviet T-54.
