About the book: 2006 / Vladimir Evgrafovich Waldenberg (1871–1940) is a historian, one of the most cited Russian scientists in world Byzantine studies. Born in Moscow, he graduated from the Faculty of Law of St. Petersburg University, defended his dissertation “Law and Right in the Philosophy of Hobbes”, and later studied the problem of the similarities and differences between Romano-Germanic and Slavic political concepts. “Old Russian Doctrines on the Limits of Tsarist Power” (1916) is one of the most significant works of V. Waldenberg, which was perhaps the first monograph on this topic in Russia. According to Academician N.K. Nikolsky, this book is important both for historians and for researchers of ancient Russian literature. V. Waldenberg combined in his works a diverse knowledge of Byzantine studies, Russian history, Slavic studies and Western European doctrines with a painstaking revision and critical study of the handwritten and printed heritage of ancient Russian literature.
