About the book: 1949 / First published in the newspaper "Nizhny Novgorod Listok", 1896, number 184, June 16, in the "Feuilleton" section, with the subtitle "Novel". In 1898, M. Gorky intended to include the story in the third volume of “Essays and Stories.” “...With this,” he wrote to Dorovatovsky, “I am sending you transport: Varenka Olesova, Suicide, Revenge, Chimney Sweep, One Autumn.” (A.M.Gorky Archive).The A.M.Gorky Archive preserved the text of the story cut out from a newspaper, pasted onto paper and stylistically corrected by the author: the subtitle was removed and the ending was changed. The story, however, was not published in “Essays and Stories” and was never republished by M. Gorky. It is printed according to the text of the newspaper “Nizhny Novgorod Listok” with corrections by M. Gorky (Archive of A.M. Gorky).
