About the book: 2007 / There is in Happalaev’s poetry an unusual for the Russian ear, but very natural for a highlander, comparison of two concepts: “flint and violet.” It is no coincidence that one of his books is called “Flint and Violet.” Metaphor contains a lot. The severity of the flinty mountain soil, the symbolism of the mountain song: a flower stalk breaks through the rocky firmament, a violet is a symbol of love. Properties of the mountain character: courage and tenderness fused together. This is one of the most attractive features of Khappalaev’s lyrics - the ability to find the only true and nationally rich image to express thoughts. Reason and feeling in Khappalaev’s poems do not contradict each other. He glorifies the courage of reason and, under its protection, kindness and tenderness. The poet's thoughts about man's duty to himself and to the world are addressed to modern times and are born of high moral demands on himself and the reader. They are not divorced from time, they come from it.
