About the book: 2008 / The action of the novel takes place in a certain Asian (or maybe African) country, which in the recent past was liberated from the rule of a Foreign power; now it is ruled by religious sectarians who worship the late prophet of the “local spill” Gakhis. The hero is a secret German agent carrying out a secret mission of transmitting information to the center. However, the novel is not a “spy” novel at all; rather, it is a metaphorical variation on the eternal theme “West is West, East is East, and they cannot come together.” The thick surreal atmosphere of the capital city of Libidissi envelops, absorbs and draws in a stranger from another civilization familiar to us - even if he himself no longer realizes it. The novel could be considered fantastic and partly absurdist, if not for the striking and frightening identifiability of real-life analogues that come to mind, be it Vietnam, Afghanistan or Iraq.
