Using the example of the main character Sergei Shelekhov, against the backdrop of great historical changes, the author traces the fate of a leading intellectual, a young naval officer, his painful and difficult overcoming of the remnants of the old worldview and ultimately his coming to the revolution, to the rebellious people.
