MediaDB / the opportunity to independently analyze the historical situation of that time, relying on extensive factual material and eyewitness accounts. “The Spanish Civil War remains one of the few conflicts of the modern era, the history of which is better described by the losers than by the victors. This is not surprising if we remember the feeling of impending catastrophe in which the whole world was in the spring of 1939 after the defeat of the republic. Anger intensified after 1945, when, while exposing the crimes of Nazi Germany, General Franco displayed an unrelenting, maniacal vindictiveness against the defeated Republicans. Younger generations find it difficult to imagine what life was really like in that era of totalitarian conflict. The ideals of collectivism, previously inherent in the army, political youth movements, and trade unions, have now collapsed. The seething cauldron of fear and hatred in that era was extremely far from the atmosphere of security, civil liberties, and the triumph of human rights in which we live today. Looking from the present to the past, we see not just a different time, but also a completely different country: over the past decades, Spain has changed beyond recognition. Its farewell to the Franco era and the civil war was one of the most striking and impressive transformations in all of Europe. Therefore, perhaps we should not try to look at the terrible conflict of many years ago through the prism of liberal values that have become the norm for us today. It is necessary to turn on the imagination, take a leap into the past in order to try to understand the views and moods of those years...” E. Beevor
