About the book: 2022 / The experience of being part of the Russian Empire had a huge impact on the legal consciousness and legal practices of Muslims in Central Asia. Interaction with the colonial authorities changed the attitude of the region's residents to their rights and legal proceedings, and the results of these changes manifested themselves both at the institutional level and at the level of the legal culture of the population. In his book, Paolo Sartori demonstrates how the legal consciousness of Muslims functioned and was transformed in everyday life under the conditions of the colonial administration. Drawing on the concepts of postcolonialism, global history and legal pluralism, the author seeks to reconsider the dominant views in modern historiography on the colonial history of the region in general and the history of law in Central Asia in particular. The study is based on rich material from the archives of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia and covers the period from the end of the 18th century to the fall of the Romanov Empire.
